Saturday Morning Matinee

Well, I'm actually posting this Saturday afternoon and there's no cinema in it, so what you gonna do about it?

Excellent Articles Of The Week

Coyote at Ten Ton Hammer tries to offend everyone by telling it to them like it is in The DEATH of EverQuest II
Go, read it and tell me that in your heart of hearts you don't know that he's telling the truth. Plus he's got pink topped boobie ladies to reinforce the message.

More high brow maybe, but Raph Koster was off to Project Horseshoe, an invite only ubergeek head banging session, at which he gave a talk on Influences.  Once again, go, read, inwardly digest, then find a quiet corner to meditate in and think "how do we game the experience of the taste of a peach..."

Game News Of  The Week

Well they've been busy bunnies over at the SOE Temple Of Fun, what with expansions for EQ2 and further additions to the expertise trees in SWG...

EQ2 - A whole new race and a chuck off big island chock full of fairies, trolls and more sppiders than you can shake a sticky thing at. Honestly, what is it with game designers now? Is the default MOB a spider??  I almost miss the D&D days of "You are in a tunnel, there is a kobold ahead of *splat* ... you have killed a kobold for 1/2copper"

The fae race are amazing. I tried them in beta so know they can be tough little buggers, but even as a newblish toon in a newblish world with a whole bunch of newblies It Is FUN.  OK, some of the NPC voices I could live without, but hey....   (I'm guessing that it's bad of me to already be wishing that a rumbler is going to get Ami?)

This week I'm hoping to met up with a few friends ingame and go run some missions as a group. Should be fun...

SWG - Commando, Medic and FINALLY Spy expertise have been added and are not on test for Chapter 4 release.  I haven't tried comando and, tbh, I didn't see many commandoes running around in my brief foray onto TC.

I tried Spy and, well, the best I can say is it's what we expected, enhanced stealth and general skills in ranged and melee, a bit of a heal and some armour boosts. Pretty much the same package as everyone else, just dressed in spylike garb.  I think one of the problems is that the devs tehmselves are still not quite sure what 'spy' does.

Currently we're the stealth/rogue/thief class you'd expect to find any an D&D descended RP ruleset but what we're meant to be doing is a bit less clear.  To be honest, you can be just as good a spy as a jedi if all you want to do is check out the oppositions deployment. I don't know... maybe it'll all become more clear if we get some spy missions..

Medic.. ah, now medic is another kettle of fish altogether.  Let me preface this by saying that I don't PvP, ever. It's just not my bag.  So, after an hour of PvPing in Restuss with a sane group I chalked up silly amounts of GCW points.  You know, the sort of group  that knows to stick near the medic so I can spam area heals and lob toxins out while the melee folk and the ranged folk do their thing and or spy runs out on 'snatch squad' missions to take down the reds flamerthrower.

I could ALMOST be tempted back for that.  But the again, I got bored after an hour and went off to hunt graul.

Other news...

Stillwaiting to try Roma Victor, Africa the MMORPG is still out there, PotBS feels like it's coming closer and, yay, I've been accepted into a LotRO kinship Marauders of Minhiriath which is peopled by the best bunch of players I have ever met in any game every, a whole horde of exSWG Rangers!

I must say, I have had it with Spiders being the default MOB on MMORPG's as well.

Which is partly why sci-fi's games have such an attraction to me, but then SWG ...

Expertise in SWG is nothing but the modification of a few stats. More of this, a little less of that, maybe a few crumbs of ability X and there ya go. Hollow.

I'm looking forward to Vanguard and Gods & Heroes. Yes, both have some involvement with SOE but purely on a hosting and distribution level.

Aye. As you know from another place I'm not overly excited about the whole 'expertise' thang... in general it's a bit of a Curates Egg.

The jedi and BH trees did seem to add something to the game, some worthwhile boosts which could only be had by losing out on other areas. But the later ones, meh, they're all pretty much devices for conforming the different archetypes to a narrow range of variants.

Combat is, no matter how it's dressed up, largely a case of buff self/team - debuff enemy - apply states - deal damage - heal/rebuff, rinsee, wash and repeat. Some profs might have slightly more choice in one or two areas, ie, medics have more buff/debuff than commando who have more damage dealing capacity, etc, but that's it.

Maybe it's me but the glamour* that Star Wars cast over the game has worn thin and we can now see the rude mechanicals that make it work. Oz's curtain has worn thin and we can see the old conman busily hauling at levers and trying to maintain the illusion. Once you've seen that, well, the magics gone.

*in the sense of a spell that's cast that obscures the true nature of a thing from the observer. See Pratchett on Elves, etc.

Yup
I fully agree with what you said about the glamour of the game being all but gone.

The other day MrBubble asked me if I *could* ever enjoy or be happy with the crafting revamp we're expecting with Chapter 5. I honestly had to say "Probably not" because when all is said and done it's the same broken NGE. Maybe not broken in the sense of bugs... just the underlying structure of the game.

SWG was like... it was like a Taun-Taun. Roaming free in the wilds of Hoth. In the grand scheme of things he didn't really matter much, yet he lived in the SW universe and probably had lots of adventures in his past.

The NGE did to SWG what Han did to the Taun-Taun; gutted the poor creature and shoved... forced Luke into the carcass.

Re: Yup
ROFL, Excellent imagery.

Except in the NGE world there'd be more particle effects and Han couldn't use a saber...

I logged in to TC last night for a *very* brief period. Checked out the new non-craftable PvP armour (No trade, no drop, can only be in bank or top level inventory, meh. So much for us 'museum' types).

And that was about it for me. Payed the rent on my houses and PA hall and logged off till the crafter/ent thing rears it's ugly head. Have already stripped out my vendors on Live and put anything worth keeping in the bank.

I think it's fair to say I'm 'taking a holiday' till, well, later.

Meanwhile, in an alternate polyverse, my fairy monk is kicking orc arse bigstyle- OOORAH!!

Re: Yup
Hey, how do the servers in EQ2 work? Are you on specific EU ones? I think I'm going to give it a try and wouldn't mind being on a server where I know somebody. I don't want a PvP server, that's for sure. :)

Re: Yup
There are EU and US servers which are accessable from both sides of the Atlantic (unlike CoH and a couple of other games that are more 'localised').

I'm over on Splitpaw, an RP/general English language EU server. Pretty cool bunch of folk and, unlike some of the older US servers where I *occaisionally* visit, it's not too busy.

If you get onto Splitpaw add Girvan and Cottingly to your friends list (under the Community tab) and I'll come laugh at you :), I mean, I'll come run through some quests with you.

Re: Yup
Oh, should have said, if you'r eonly seeing US servers, change the language option in the drop down box on, iirc, the accept/decline page when you launch.

You'll then get a warning about downloading a whole pile of files etc, just a load of localised language stuff as far as I can see, and you should then be taken to character creation for the EU side.
